THIS IS NOT ART THERAPY

ART, NOT ART THERAPY

THIS IS NOT ART THERAPY is an artist residency/internship program situated in a community-based AIDS organization (CBAO) setting. The program provides a large studio space for practicing artists and graduate level artist-researchers seeking residency and/or internship requirements, or creative experience within a CBAO and the issues and fields of study presented by HIV/AIDS and its intersectionalities -- including race, gender, sexuality, LGBTTI2QQ orientations, ableism, poverty, harm reduction, social justice, biopolitics, queer ecologies, and the social determinants of health.

"My doctoral research project (This Is Not Art Therapy: Artistic Responses to the Biopolitics of HIV/AIDS), through the Faculty of Environmental Studies at York University, branches from this artist residency/internship program. The program reverberates throughout my research as both a form of activism (in and of itself) and the performative creation of a research field: the CBAO as site of creative expression and arts practice-led research that are not limited to (or bound by) art therapy practices. Conceptualized as a template for CBAOs in general, THIS IS NOT ART THERAPY is developed and stewarded specifically at the Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA), Canada s largest CBAO."

Phase 1:
Andrew Zealley aka Clinical Sonician at Disco Hospital
is artist-in-residence at The Toronto People With AIDS Foundation (PWA)
July 2015 through March 2016

Phase 2:
Studio residencies by Balca Arda, Peter Hobbs, and Tobaron Waxman (November 2016 through March 2017). In each 5-week residency, artists work directly with 3 PWA clients (collaborators) over the course of 4 studio sessions. This phase of the program culminates with the publication of an artist bookwork: This Is Not Art Therapy, This Is Group Work (Disco Hospital Books & Records). The book launches at PWA in fall 2017.

THIS IS NOT ART THERAPY (Phase 2) is funded by the Ontario HIV Treatment Network (OHTN).

BLACK LIGHT DISTRICT

Black Light District documents a disturbed cleansing ritual: the solemn pouring of seven litres of India ink on full moon in June 2014. As an exploration of skrying -- a divinational practice using the surface of smoked glass, mirror, or fluid -- Black Light District interrogates processes of ceremonial cleansings in tension with knowledge construction around territories marked by the opaque. Is this knowledge, prophecy, protest, or analytical hoax? A veiled glance at HIV/AIDS, or undetectable? Bloodwork and pipelines; backrooms at the disco; condomless, magnetic. Black Light District pours ink because there is a water shortage. End times and the fortuneteller cannot read a thing for the murk.

Black Light District comprises photography, a dramaturgical video (with audio) in four parts, typography, and bookwork (edition of 50 numbered copies). Large-format photographs include video stills and staged compositions. The stills -- some culled from unused video footage -- imagine the more hallucinatory phases of skrying and specific junctures of oblivion or psychic transformation. The more formal images, like Being and Otherness (pictured), force intersectional meanings of magic, spirit, discoed existentialism, and drugs. Minimalist and slow-paced, the video (15 minutes, 30 seconds) is intended as a map to the ritual; and the divinational properties and imaginings conceivable within the pouring gesture and the turbidity of the ink.

NEW YORK CITY: ONE GARDEN ONE YEAR

CHRYSANNE STATHACOS & ANDREW ZEALLEY:
NEW YORK CITY: ONE GARDEN ONE YEAR

DVD
edition of 108, numbered

Six-hundred photographs of a courtyard garden, located on the border of the Chelsea and Greenwich Village districts of New York Citytaken by Stathacos over the course of 12 monthslook at nature as a cultural mirror for birth, growth, death and decay. Zealley's score—a counterpoint of instrumental and vocal passages, and international site recordings gathered in Florence, New York City and Torontoserves as a guide to the four seasons. Experienced together, this dissolving audio/visual composite evokes a visual mantra, an observation on change, a year within 18-minutes.

RED 76: 72-HOUR NUCLEAR WAR
March 2007
featuring PSBEUYS NUCLEAR WAR SO HIGH

"For a while now we've be working on a project called 72hr. Nuclear War; soliciting contributions of cover versions of the Sun Ra Arkestra song Nuclear War. For the weekend of March 23rd, in homage to the Yippies 1967 levitation of the Pentagon, we will arrange a series of five hand-built radio transmitters around the city of Philadelphia. For the entirety of the weekend we will broadcast the accumulated cover versions that we have received of the song throughout the city for all to listen to as a means of auditory exorcism. As the songs regenerate themselves through the ears, brains, and psyches of the individuals who listen to them we will begin the process of casting out the demons of governmental aggression summoned forth with such vigor over the last seven years. Trust us, it'll work." RED76.

's decision to occupy major American art institutions is tactical. SILENT|LISTEN reconnects the art world and AIDS activists with memories of when the arts served as a crucial arena - in some communities, the only public space - for open discussions about the pandemic. Despite the current absence of AIDS-related exhibitions the crisis continues, abetted as always by refusals to remember, refusals to mourn, and refusals to act.
Central to this project is a reconsideration of the mission statement of ACT UP: "united in anger to end the AIDS crisis through direct action." In the current proto-fascist historical moment, SILENT|LISTEN invokes affective responses other than rage as constitutive of collective action. The alternative, waiting for anger, will prove politically disastrous in terms of AIDS and the larger political crisis.

ONE GARDEN ONE NIGHT ONE WISH

ONE GARDEN ONE NIGHT ONE WISH

A site-specific installation by Chrysanne Stathacos and Andrew Zealley, for NUIT BLANCHE, dusk to dawn, September 30 to October 1, 2006. Location: Philosopher's Walk, Toronto.

Visitors are invited to attach printed "wishes," available on-site, to the branches and trunk of a maple tree - which emanates a sound score. This sound/wishing tree becomes a meditative focus as visitors leave their symbolic messages. The score is fully realized when accompanied by sounds intrinsic to the area: footsteps and murmurings of passers-by, traffic in the distance, the hum of the city and the still of the night.

EMPATHETIC EAR
Audio Multiple: Edition of 100

EMPATHETIC EAR is the audio installation for HALOS: DAVID BUCHAN AND ROBERT FLACK (curated by Andrew Zealley). EMPATHETIC EAR is conceived around spoken word cassette recordings, given to Zealley by Robert Flack (1957-1993), during the final months of the artist's life. The recordings psychic readings between Flack, fellow artist Chrysanne Stathacos, and seer Jeremy Stockwell are reduced to their visual sound wave state, silent "gates" through which manipulated fragments of Flack's original LP collection are glimpsed.

EMPATHETIC EAR is now available as a limited audio edition, 100 numbered copies. Packaged with a card depicting an original handwritten message by Robert Flack. Available at Art Metropole.

About the original exhibition at Garnet Press Gallery, January 19 to February 18, 1991:

"The layering of images and visual styles, and the references to assorted cultural and symbolic languages, and to the mystical body and alchemical transformation, create a rich maze. General evocations of different kinds of knowledge of the body -- visual, medical, mythological, spiritual -- are united in a pseudo-psychedelic pop sensibility and transcribed onto the body. (The fine line between mysticism and mystification is largely in the eye of the beholder: for all its esoterica, this work that seeks to engage with a contemporary audience).

"The same could be said of the sound environment by Andrew Zealley, which accompanied the installation of photographs. Rhythmic, pulsing, non-narrative, with allusions to various cultures and times, invoking/involving the body of the viewer, the sound transformed the space from gallery to shrine/dance club, and also altered the experience of viewing the photographs from largely visual to more fully physical. This effect is consistent with the artists' statement in a double-page spread in OUT Magazine (No.9, Jan/Feb1991), which stated that the work 'embodies ideas that integrate the body and mind as transformational tools.' It also states that the work is about, 'investigating ideas, disciplines and techniques designed to improve mental/physical health - serving to strengthen the immune system and encourage a positive state of mind.'"
